This Safety Guide provides recommendations and guidance on fulfilling the requirements of IAEA Safety Standards Series No. GSR Part 3, Radiation Protection and Safety of Radiation Sources: International Basic Safety Standards, for ensuring radiation protection and safety of radiation sources in medical uses of ionizing radiation with regard to patients, workers, carers and comforters, volunteers in biomedical research, and the public. It covers radiological procedures in diagnostic radiology (including dentistry), image guided interventional procedures, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy. Recommendations and guidance are provided on applying a systematic approach to ensure that there is a balance between being able to utilize the benefits from medical uses of ionizing radiation and minimizing the risk of radiation effects to people.

The course content is provided through the courtesy of INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY, Radiation Protection and Safety in Medical Uses of Ionizing Radiation, IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSG-46, IAEA, Vienna (2018).

On completion of this course the participant should be able to:

  1. Name all three categories of radiation exposure.
  2. List the dose limits for occupational and public exposure.
  3. List the core responsibilities of a medical physicist.
  4. Name three other medical specialties where ionizing radiation is used.
  5. List specific design features that should be included in fluoroscopy equipment.
  6. Name the three dosimetric quantities used in mammography.
  7. In patients hospitalized for therapy with radiopharmecuticals, name at least five safety protocols that should be in place is assure staff and patient safety.
  8. Explain the considerations of breast feeding after a patient has been administered radiopharmeceuticals.
  9. List the protocols that should be in place to minimize the likelihood of unintended or accidental exposure in nuclear medicine.
  10. For patients that have died after undergoing a nuclear medicine procedure, describe how the immediate handling of the body, both in the hospital, home or other place so that exposure risk is minimized.
