Joint Commission Approves CT Standards

According to a recent article posted on the ASRT website, The Joint Commission recently approved new standards that specify minimum qualifications for technologists who perform diagnostic computed tomography exams for accredited hospitals, critical access hospitals and ambulatory care organizations.

Technologists who perform diagnostic computed tomography exams will be required to have advanced-level certification in CT by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board or have one of the following qualifications:

  • State licensure that permits them to perform diagnostic CT exams and documented training on the provision of diagnostic CT exams.
  • Registration and certification in radiography by ARRT and documented training on the provision of diagnostic CT exams.
  • Certification in nuclear medicine technology by ARRT or NMTCB and documented training on the provision of diagnostic CT exams.

The ASRT was instrumental in shaping the new requirements on behalf of its members and in the best interest of patient safety.

The changes take effect on Sept. 1, 2016.

ARRT Updates the Requirement for CEs

Excerpt from:ARRT® Continuing Education Requirements
Last Revised: September 1, 2015
Published: September 1, 2015

..."Effective January 1, 2016 directed readings, home study courses, or Internet activities reported in a biennium may not be repeated for credit in the same biennium. These activities are not complete until the post-test has been submitted and the CE sponsor has issued the certificate of participation. The pre-printed date on the certificate is the date of completion; and must be applied by the CE sponsor. R.T.s may not alter this date...."

This update means that technologists will now be allowed to repeat courses as long as they are not taking the same course in the same biennium period.  For instance, if you completed the 33.5 credit course "The Essentials of Anatomy & Physiology" in June 2015 for your biennium ending in July 2015, you could take the course again for the biennium ending in July 2017.

If you completed the 33.5 credit course "The Essentials of Anatomy & Physiology" in June 2014 and again in June 2015, you would not receive credit for both instances of the course since it was taken during the same biennium.
